Just Horsin' Around

Once again, Dad's cousin Cherie brought her granddaughters down for a weekend of horse riding at Scott's. It was a fun weekend with LOTS of kids (9 of them one day!) riding horses! ;)

Isaac LOVED riding. Even the mini Spirit. He was SO proud of himself. "I can do it by myself Mom!"

Ha!! Little Miss Anna, struggling for control. Boy does that sound familiar!!!

Isaac & Ellie waited patiently for their turns on the big horses.

 Silly Grace!!!

The difference a year makes...Anna couldn't wait to canter on her horse this year!

Good posture, but KEEP YOUR HEELS DOWN! Ha!

We have another horse lover in the family!

Jacob rode for a little bit, but it's not really his thing.

Amanda came one day to ride. We'll make a cowgirl yet out of this California girl! ;)

Jacob preferred Spirit.

As always, it was a fun weekend and we all appreciated Scott & Amy's hospitality!

Ranch Rodeo

A couple weeks ago, Healing Hearts Ranch put on a ranch rodeo to raise money for the ranch. It was a smashing success...or I should say God greatly blessed Scott and everyone at the Ranch. Admission was $1 and there were dozens of items auctioned off, both by silent auction and by live auction. The crowd numbered over 600 and there were 10 (I think) teams competing from all over the state. When it was all said and done, over $20,000 was raised!!!!! Wow! I'm excited to see where God is taking them. They touch so many lives every day.
My whole family was able to make it. The cousins had so much fun playing together and watching the competition. If you've never been to a ranch rodeo, you should go the next time you have a chance. All of the events are based on what happens on a real, working ranch. Ranch rodeos are actually where today's rodeos started from. Some examples of the events included doctoring, trailer loading, and roping. It was fun to watch the teams compete!

Papa, giving a DOUBLE shoulder ride to Anna and Isaac! Crazy man.

This was supposed to be a picture to show the arena but evidently I aimed a little too low! Ha. I don't even know who those boys are!

Even better was getting to hang out with the Dashiells at the rodeo! Stacey and I are kindred-spirit country girls, feeling the most at home at things like ranch rodeos (while our city-boy husbands feel quite out of place! Lol).

This little cowboy was SO excited for the rodeo! I had to wake him up from a nap to go, and he was happy as could be when he found out we were headed to the rodeo. He insisted on finding his cowboy hat! :)

The cousins had a lot of fun watching and playing together. The older boys disappeared for most of the evening, playing ball with other kids and playing in the dirt. The girls, especially Anna, were pretty well riveted to the action in the arena.

Anna now has another goal in life...to become the little cowgirl that rides out into the arena before and after the rodeo carrying the American flag!

Not to be left behind, Isaac took his turn climbing the fence to watch the action up close.

We brought Anna's chaps and vest to share for pictures. Toward the end of the rodeo, she couldn't wait any longer to put them on. She leaned up against the fence and said, "Mom, take my picture!"

It was a very fun night for everyone. The teams did great, the kids had fun, and we raised a lot of money for an awesome organization that is pursuing God's will and glorifying Him in what they do. I'd call that a smashing success!

Busy Weekend

Last weekend was busy, to say the least. But it was a good busy. First, Audrie, Cherie, and Binga came to visit Scott's again. We spent most of Friday afternoon over there.
The baby mini was in the pen. Isaac and Anna had a blast playing with him and his mama and daddy!

Too stinkin' cute!!!

Isaac didn't want to ride very long this time because I wouldn't go out of the corral! I couldn't even "go bast" because the saddle was too small this time for both of us to sit IN the saddle. So he lost interest pretty quickly in riding in a circle slowly!
Grandpa and Grandma got here that evening, too. They brought a nice, big delivery of produce from Anders Farm Stand!! Colorado peaches, Rocky Ford cantaloupe, sweet corn, peppers, green beans. Mmmm!!!

Bright and early Saturday morning, I got even more delicious produce!! Can I just say again how much I love Bountiful Baskets?! Can you guess what I spent all Sunday afternoon and evening doing?!

A little less bright & early, the ladies went to the annual Women of Grace women's conference. There were close to 750 women this year!!! This is about 2/3 of the room. It was, as always, phenomenal.  Kris Goertzen is such a gifted speaker. The Lord always uses her to speak to the heart of things and pour Biblical truths over our souls. I strongly encourage you to make plans to attend next August!

After the conference, the men and kidlets met us in town to see the movie Planes! The kids were ecstatic! Two bags of popcorn and 20 minutes later, Isaac was ready to go home! I think it was a combination of getting to the theatre 45 minutes before the movie started, him being tired, and not feeling great. I really thought he would love it. Oh well. Anna and Jacob absolutely had a great time!

Grandpa was a weeeee bit nervous about this lap-sitter......

My Baby is SEVEN!!!

Anna wanted a pool party and Uncle Jeremy and Aunt Alisha were nice enough to let us crash their house! It was just a family party, but for my family...that means close to 30 people! We're so blessed to have family that comes to celebrate with us!

Since harvest was so early this year, Aunt Cara wanted to make her a cake. Usually, her birthday is right smack in the middle of harvest. Let's just say Aunt Cara hit a home run with this cake!! :)

Aaron's brother and family got the kids Dave Ramsey's children's books. They teach about saving and giving. The kids love them. We recently spent quite a bit of time de-cluttering Anna's room. Her and I talked about how much is enough and how she doesn't play with a lot of her toys and what she should do with them, etc. One of the books talks about an orphanage, and we've talked about orphanages before when some friends went through an adoption. And we've talked about being thankful for what we have and not being greedy, etc etc. So when it came time to send out her birthday invitations, I asked her what she thought she should do about getting presents. She said she had too many toys as it was. Her first suggestion was to donate the toys to an orphanage. Since there isn't one nearby, I asked what else she could do. We came up with the idea of donating the money that would have been spent on her gifts to Uncle Scott's Ranch. It makes my heart sing to know that she has a heart for others and desires to give already. And our family is so incredibly generous! She raised over $100! A couple people had gotten gifts for her before I sent out the invites, so she did still have a couple of presents to open.

 Lots of cousins!

Isaac thought Anna's horse was the perfect size for him to ride!

Isaac crashed. Poor Jacob was sick with strep and had to stay home with Daddy. :(

 She loves her cake!!

Isaac and I slept in Bryce's room and Isaac decided that sleep was for the birds that morning.

I love the mural on Bryce's wall! Amazing.

So we went for a walk over to Great Grandpa and Grandma's house.

 Beautiful country sunrise

Isaac LOVES the pool table at Grandma Mary's. He remembered it from the day before when he went over there with Papa & Binga.

After a loooong day, Isaac crashed hard when we got home!

Jacob was feeling much better when we got home. When I checked on him, I found him sound asleep with his leg in the air!

Saying Goodbye to Maverick

Today has been very hard. Actually, the first part of the day was pretty fun. We got to go ride horses at Scott's Ranch. But the purpose of the trip was to tell Anna that we can't keep Maverick. Scott has been training him for almost a year and he is just plain dangerous. He will be riding great, even working cows, and out of nowhere he explodes. Not only has he bucked Scott off, but he's also gone after Scott after he bucked him off. He's just completely unpredictable, which makes him even more dangerous. It was even harder to tell her because a few months ago, he was doing so good that we really thought he was going to work out. I've posted before about Maverick and her connection with him. Ugh. Just so hard. Of all the Mustangs Scott has trained...this has to be one that doesn't take the training. Just. So. Hard.

The last time we were here, Anna was able to basically walk up to Maverick and he let her pet him. This time was totally different. In a way, I'm glad he was so wild. I think it helped her realize how much Maverick has changed. Scott had a very hard time catching him. He had to rope him, and even then it was a struggle.

Beautiful, yet the potential to be deadly. Maverick is a wild horse and we've spent a lot of time talking about how Maverick is not a bad horse, he's just wild. And some horses just cannot be trained...the wild can't be taken out of them. The movie Spirit has actually been quite helpful in understanding this.

This horse has captured my daughter's heart. As she told me tonight:
"Mommy, you know what's deep in my heart? Maverick. He'll always be there, deep in my heart. In a little corral."

I am still so amazed at Anna's innate sense with a horse. She has an unending supply of patience and calmness. After witnessing how wild (and frankly a bit scary!) Maverick was as Scott caught him, she still had no qualms with walking up to Maverick in a calm, quiet way. I have no doubt that Scott's presence has a lot to do with it. But she also just has a "sixth sense" when it comes to horses.

She slowly worked her way to his nose until he let her touch him. And when he raised his head away from her, she gently pulled down on the lead rope.

The whole time she was petting Maverick, Scott was explaining to Anna how dangerous he is. He didn't flat out say that we can't keep Maverick. I kind of think Anna knew it, but since it wasn't plainly said she could deny it.

After petting Maverick for a bit, Scott asked if she wanted to ride. Duh! ;) He saddled up Tigger for her. He's an old horse (too old according to Anna...not fast enough!). She got some more lessons in riding. She catches on pretty quickly and is doing good. We're hoping to be able to take her over there every week this summer for a horsemanship class!

Scott talked to her some more while he was saddling Tigger. By her expression in this picture, I think you can tell she was getting the picture.
Just before supper, we went to help Scott feed some horses he has in a pasture. On the way, Scott told Anna, "Your mom & dad need to get you a horse." She told him she already had a horse. I knew then that I would just have to flat-out say "We can't keep Maverick." She clammed up and wouldn't say anything. As we were standing in the pasture, I asked Anna if she understood that we can't keep Maverick. She started crying a little bit and asked, "Do we have to sell Maverick??" I tried my best to explain again why we can't keep him. And I shared something Scott told me. Several months ago, Scott was using Maverick at Cowboy Church almost every week. One week, he showed them how he could get Maverick to lay down flat (a huge feat that shows how much a horse trusts you) and compared it to submitting to Christ. He said he still has people come up to him and tell him how much that meant to them, how it touched them. I told Anna that even if that is the only "purpose" Maverick can serve for us, that's pretty awesome...for her horse to be used to teach others about Christ! I'm not sure how much she understood. She cried just a tiny bit, but being surrounded by horses, she couldn't stay sad for very long. She seemed to be handling it pretty well...much better than I thought she would. But then we got home and it was bedtime. We talked a little bit and then she asked if she could say her bedtime prayers. She prayed silently and when she finished, I could tell that she was pretty upset but trying not to let it out. I told her it was okay to be sad and to cry. That was all she needed to hear. We talked and cried and talked and cried for over 2 1/2 hours. I could tell that as long as she talked about something, even if it was horses, she could keep herself distracted from Maverick. But as soon as she stopped talking, she would just break down again. Absolutely broke this Mama's heart. I feel just awful. Maybe we shouldn't have done the whole horse thing this way...maybe we shouldn't have told her Maverick could be her horse and just waited til we knew for sure...maybe, maybe, maybe. But as I told Anna, God has a purpose in this. Put all our sorrows and hurts in His hands and let Him heal our hearts and lean on Him even more. That's what I told Anna...I think it's a good lesson for more than just Anna. I would appreciate your prayers for Anna's tender heart in the days to come. I know it's going to be very hard for her.
